Julie is a Learning and Development professional with over eight years of experience in designing and managing educational programming for professional associations. Before landing her dream career, Julie dedicated herself to many work and learning experiences. She taught high school math, computer literacy and history for 8 years with the majority of the time teaching at her high school alma mater. Julie was also a professional volunteer, a corporate Microsoft Office trainer and started her own computer training company. Training Wheels developed its own computer literacy courses to teach older adults and cognitively disabled adults the basics of computing. The courses were held in-person at various businesses, universities and assisted living communities. She was also an outdoor festival coordinator during this time and learned the ins and outs of community development, fundraising, volunteer management, food regulations, publicity and event management.
A career ah-hah moment came when Julie was hired by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP). The association industry provided everything Julie likes to do professionally-develop educational programs and curriculum, project manage and create efficient processes and foremost learn about the excellent work other people do. Originally, her duties at APBP involved transitioning from an association management company to a staff-only organization. This role blossomed into becoming the Program Director. Julie’s main responsibilities included managing a nationwide in-person seminar, fundraised for and planned conferences, managed membership processes as well as implemented a new website with association management system (AMS) and social media tools. During this time, Julie also completed a M.S. degree in Management in 2008.
Wanting to continue to help people who are passionate about their work, Julie formed Walden Group in 2010. The company is dedicated to developing excellent content and learner-centric design. She is an expert at knowing when to push or pull, lead or follow subject-matter experts to get their very best content ideas. Julie’s iterative design methods plan for and celebrate the late-breaking subject-matter expert content. Sometimes the best ideas are only available on the day of publishing. Using Articulate Storyline Julie pushes the boundaries of e-learning courses. She creates highly creative, interactive and relevant courses using instructional designs including scenario-based training, interactive video and graphical instructional aids.
