Each quarter, SEWI-ATD turns the spotlight on an active member who has been visible in the chapter by attending events and participating in other ATD functions. We are proud to acknowledge the important work of our members, provide additional career exposure within the Talent Development community, and help you to get to know a colleague just a little bit better!
If you are interested in nominating another member for the spotlight, contact Megan Cardenas at membership@sewi-atd.org.

This month, we are pleased to feature
Kayla Thompsen
Tell us a little about yourself. I’m a remote Learning Experience Design Manager at Northwestern Mutual (Milwaukee’s favorite insurance-and-wealth-management company). I live in Waterford with my two daughters, Stella (8) and Ruby (4) and our fluffy English Cream Golden Retriever, Pearl — equal parts chaos coordinator and cuddle machine. What attracted you to the field of Talent Development? I’m addicted to “aha” moments. Helping someone create those delightful sparks and flip that mental light switch is my professional hobby. What prompted you to join SEWI-ATD? I’ve been part of the chapter for a decade and have learned a ton from its programs and people. After the Board event in June 2025, the VP Community Relations role felt like the perfect fit for my experience — so I jumped in with both feet. What do you enjoy most about the chapter? Every event leaves me smarter and a little more inspired. We’ve got brilliant, curious people — and being around them is like a creativity buffet. What piece of advice would you offer to people coming into talent development? Join SEWI-ATD. Drink from the PDN fountains, network like your future depends on it (because it kind of does), and let this chapter teach you the fundamentals while expanding your circle. Favorite Blog or Podcast? I’m a fan of thought leaders who mix insight with heart — Adam Grant, Brené Brown, and Mel Robbins are on my playlist and reading list. What do you do for fun? I’m a mom-on-the-move: carting kids to practices, pool days, zoo trips in summer, and trampoline park escapades when it’s not. I lift heavy things at the gym, enjoy walks and hikes, and in summer you’ll find me at a beer garden soaking up acoustic tunes. |
